Garbage Bin Arsons
This week, Crime Stoppers is asking for your help in identifying the people responsible for deliberately setting garbage containers on fire.
Saskatoon Police often respond to large residential garbage containers that have been deliberately set on fire. Usually gasoline or some other flammable liquid is poured into the container, and then lit on fire. The fire that results burns very rapidly and often totally destroys the container within minutes.
These containers are usually beside fences and garages which can also receive extensive damage as a result of the fire.
Each container costs approximately $500.00 to replace which is ultimately paid for by you, the citizens of Saskatoon.

Senior Safety
The elderly are often regarded by criminals as easy targets for many types of crime. Every elderly person should be aware of schemes to swindle money and take steps to prevent them.
Be aware that door to door sales or offers still exist, but are not as common as in the past. The easiest and most common tool for a thief is the phone. An example of a fraud would be a person posing as a bank employee asking you to verify bank and personal information due to a problem. This is not the way a legitimate bank would conduct business.
Many seniors do not report when they have been victimized. They may not want to bother the police, find it too difficult to tell their families, and are too embarrassed.
If you are a senior, or have a family member that is a senior and still living on their own, here is how you can be proactive:
-have a plan, discuss your finances with family or a power of attorney and have that information in order.
-make sure there is some type of accountability set up for the power of attorney
-don’t be afraid to assert yourself, and if the fraud is through a phone, hang up and call the bank or whoever claims to be calling yourself to verify they are legitimate.
Crime Stoppers is pleased to help all the members of our community and hopefully this message will help protect a member of your family from becoming a victim. Remember, if you have any information that could help solve an unsolved crime, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or leave a tip here online.

Street Robbery Prevention
A street robbery is an attempted or completed theft directly from a person, where the property is removed by force or threat of force with or without a weapon. It is a crime of opportunity, most often committed by teens.
Subjects may use weapons to gain control of their victims. The offender rarely acts alone, preferring to be in a group to swarm the victim. They may use the element of surprise and a show of force like punching, pushing or threats to get the victims to comply with demands.
Here are some helpful tips:
-avoid hangouts frequented by groups of teens such as malls, bus terminals, and outside businesses, especially in the evening hours.
-if you sense you are being followed, change directions or cross the street and get to a place where you can alert others
-Maintain a cool demeanor and follow the offender’s instructions precisely. Your possessions are replaceable, you are not.
-target possessions are logoed clothing and electronics so keep them hidden.
-Get to a phone and call 911 as soon as possible, noting the offender’s appearance, physical features and clothing.
-And don’t forget: always look for an escape route!
These tips, along with common sense will help you to be aware and decrease your chance of being a victim. If you have any information that could help solve an unsolved crime, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or go online at www.saskatooncrimestoppers.com.
